God’s Wisdom for the Craft Seller

Where there is a community of people, there have been businesses.  Even from the very earliest of history records.  Albeit, not all entrepreneurs are “in it for the money”.  Back in history, there were categorizations of jobs: hunters, millers, cobblers, blacksmiths, bakers, etc.  These are forms of businesses.  Back in those days, they either did it right, or they died (and oftentimes took an entire community with them).  So, how did they do it?  I think the best place for us to look for to insight into these earlier communities is the bible.  Not only is the bible a readily available source but it should be our guide for every aspect of life anyways (but that’s an entirely different argument).

Let’s start in Proverbs with 6:10-11 “Yet a little sleep, a little slumber and a little folding of hands to sleep; so shall your poverty come.”  Simply put, idleness does not equal profit.  Quite the contrary, it takes a LOT of work, *especially* for the home-run entrepreneur.  See, if you were to work for an employer, either the employer will be doing the marketing, or he/she will have hired someone specifically for that job.  So, all you need to focus on is your specific little job.  BUT, in this crafting market, you are the only one.  You have to do the creating, the marketing, the researching.  Every job is up to you.  If you neglect any of these, your profit may not be as high as you need it to be (especially if you are selling those adorable hand-crafts as a full time job).

Continuing on in Proverbs, we can come across 22:29, which says “see thou a man diligent in his business?  He shall stand before kings; he shall not stand before vain men.”  I think that this verse compliments the previous one marvelously!  All that hard work that you’ve been doing, WILL pay off.  If you aren’t seeing success with what you are doing right now, do some research, change it up.  Keep trying until you find something that DOES work.  Become an expert and stand in the place of exaltation and honor.

Ecclesiastes 9:10 “For whatsoever thy hands find to do, do it with all thy might; for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom in the grave.”  Once we are dead, that’s it.  I’m not saying that there isn’t an afterlife (quite the contrary, but again, that’s a different discussion altogether), but we only get one life.  We might as well live it to the fullest and accomplish the most that we can.

There are several more verses in the wonderful book that “God breathed” and it is very much applicable now as it was once upon a time.  These verses have reminded me, once again, that God has a plan for the way that things are suppose to work.  Business ventures have definitely not been left out of His “higher ways”.
