Basic Beanie Free Crochet Pattern 2.0!

img_0854UPDATED (March 4, 2014)

Free crochet patterns for EVERY beanie size you could possibly want from Preemie all the way up to adult large.  My originally posted corhcet patterns for these beanies can be found HERE, just in case you are interested, but seeing as it was one of my earlier crochet patterns ever written, it is quite poor in quality and understand-ability (sure, that can be a word).  So, I re-worked my crochet pattern and now have it available to the public!

Stitches required

  • Ch – Chain – Yo, pull through
  • Ss – Slip Stitch – Insert hook, Yo, pull through both loops on hook
  • Dc – Double Crochet – Yo, Insert hook, yo, pull through, yo, pull through two loops on hook, yo, pull through remaining two loops
  • Inc – Work 2 Dc both into the next stitch

Materials Needed

Starting off with these basic beanie crochet patterns you could make all sorts of different hats: striped, mohawk, owl, monster, with earflaps, newsie, simple, with flowers…And, as always, if you have any questions about any of these, or need any help along the way, please do not hesitate to shoot me an email {familybugs (AT) gmail (DOT) com}.

Please note that the Ch 2 that occurs at the beginning of each round does NOT EVER count as a dc stitch throughout the crochet patterns.

These patterns are based off of the measurements taken from Bev’s Size chart, if you aren’t sure about sizing measurements…well, I’ve included that too!
Clover “Shiro” Tape Measure

  • Adult Man: Head Circumference:  23″ – 24″  58.4 cm – 61 cm; Hat height = 11″-11.5″

Gauge Swatch – This is used to determine if your tension and hook is going to create a similarly sized product at the end.  After completing this, if your swatch measures larger, you might want to choose a smaller hook and complete another gauge swatch.  If your swatch measures smaller, choose a larger hook and try again.

ROW 2: Dc all the way across (15) Ch 1, turn.
ROWs 3, 5: Repeat Row 1
ROWs 4, 6: Repeat Row 2
Finish off.  Swatch should measure pretty close to 5.5” X 3

Why double crochet? You might ask.  Well, double crochet is fast, relatively easy, and I think that it still results in a really warm product.  The looser stitches trap more air between the fibers and air is an incredible insulator (that is if you can trap it)!  Also, the looser stitching will result in a hat that has more stretch and give to it, which is more likely to fit all sorts of head shapes and sizes 😀  So, ENJOY!!

Feel free to use and distribute the finished hats however you would like, I don’t mind finished hats being sold from these patterns (That’s what I do with them), or for charity purposes, or auctions…or personal use…turn it upside down and use it as a bowl, add some handles and use it as a bag…skies the limit!

Crochet necktie and bow tie pattern

Sometimes it can be so difficult to dress up little boys in nice clothing. I mean, little girls have dresses, leggings, skirts, frills, bows, flowers, tights, and ruffles. What do little boys get? Usually just slacks and a button collared shirt. That’s about it. So, if your looking for more ways to dress up that sweet little boy, why not try a little crocheted necktie or bow tie?

These are the patterns that I use, and then sell, and I am sure there are dozens of different ways that you could change them up to make stripes, polka dots, owls, monkeys…your imagination is the limit 🙂 I do give permission for others to make and sell these products, but please, when possible, link back to this page and give me credit as the pattern designer and do not redistribute or sell this pattern as your own.  I also apologize for the crazy pictures.  Wordpress recently changed the way that I can insert photos and I have not yet figured out how it works.

IMG_4489Bow tie

With a smaller hook, g or h, chain 52.

Double crochet in third chain from hook and in every chain across (50). Finish off.
That is your strap.

Using same small hook chain 10.

  1. Double crochet in third chain from hook and all the way across (8).
  2. Chain 2, turn, double crochet across (8).
  3. Continue until you have 8 or so rows. It isn’t an exact science, however wide you want your bow-tie to be. Finnish off.

Optional: sc around putting three sc in each corner.

Pinch the center of your bow tie, and the center of your strap and wrap some yarn around it to form your knot. I like the crazy look of some misplaced strands here and there, some might prefer carefully placed strands that are all in a row. Finish off.

Add buttons to the strap and it is good to go 🙂

Necktie

With small hook, g or h, chain 52.

  1. Dc in third chain from hook. Dc 20. You should have about half of the strap completed. Now it is going to get a bit confusing, so stick with me and use the pictures for reference.IMG_5680
  2. Chain the length of your necktie. 21-61 depending on the age you are making for. Doesn’t even have to be an even number, I just like even numbers best.  I also like to throw in a color change for the bottom third of the tie part, but this is also optional.
  3. Sc in second chain from hook and all the way across back to your strap.
  4. IMG_5681
  5. Dc in the next chain stitch from your strap. Dc another in the strap.
  6. Now we are going to work another row in the necktie, so turn your work, skip over the two dc that you just made and sc in the tie and all the way down the length. Chain 1 turn.
  7. Repeat rows 5-7 until your neck tie reaches the desired width or thickness.
  8. IMG_5682
  9. Double crochet across the rest of the strap and finish off.
  10. Yes, I know it looks a little bit wonky at this point, don’t worry, because now you are going to wrap the yarn and form your “knot”.
  11. IMG_5683   IMG_5684

  12. Add buttons to the straps and it is good to go.

IMG_5422

For the owl add-ons, grab the smallest hook you can find, a D or an E hook.

Beak: Chain 4. Sc in second chain from hook, hdc, dc, finish off.  Leave a tail for sewing on.

Eyes (Make two). (if not using a button, start with black.  If using a button, just use white)

  1. Chain 2.  In second chain from hook work 10 sc.
  2. Slip stitch to first sc to join. Ch 1, do not turn.  If not using a button, color change to white and work 2 sc in each stitch around (20).
  3. Slip stitch to first sc to join. Ch 1, do not turn. Work sc in same stitch, repeat the following pattern around *sc, work 2 sc in the next*. Finish off leaving a long tail for sewing in.

Santa hats crochet free pattern

Free Crochet Pattern

Christmas is looming ever nearer! It is by far my favorite season of the years. Mostly because I get to go home and see my family (many of whom I haven’t seen in six months or longer). This year is going to be extra fun, because two of my children are FINALLY old enough and knowledgable enough to get excited and anticipate and really get into the Christmas spirit. Even if you don’t celebrate Christmas, I’m sure there is still room in your heart for some little elfs, or even some pixies! Here is my patter to crochet Santa hats (ooh, they’d also make for some awesome birthday party hats!)

Anyways…start with whatever hook you want. I like bigger hooks (j or k), keeping in mind that smaller hooks (like an f or a g) will result in a stiffer hat. And your preferred yarn of choice. I like to use wasted weight yarn, but this could also work with fine or even sock yarn. Not too sure how this pattern would work with crochet thread (like for ornaments), if you tryit, let me know how it turns out 🙂

Free Holiday PatternPattern
Chain 3.
RND 1: in 3rd chain from hook work 6 dc. Join to the third chain that you made at the beginning with a Slip stitch. Ch 2 (do not turn).

RND 2: Work dc in the same space. 1 dc. Repeat the following two more times *work two dc in next stitch, 1 dc*. (1:1 ratio, 1 space with two dc, 1 space with 1 dc). Slip stitch to top of chain 2. Ch 2, do not turn.

RND 3: Work dc in the same space. Dc in next two spaces. Repeat the following two times *work two dc in next space, dc in next two spaces*. (1:2 ratio, 1 space with 2 dc, 2 spaces with 1 dc). Slip stitch to top of chain 2 to join. Ch 2, do not turn.

RND 3: work dc in the same space. Dc in next three spaces. Repeat the following two times *work two dc in next space, dc in next three spaces*. (1:3 ratio, 1 space with 2 dc, 3 spaces with 1 dc). Slip stitch to top of ch 2 to join. Ch 2, do not turn.

RND 3: work dc in the same space. Dc in the next four spaces. Repeat the following two times *work two dc in next space, dc in next four spaces*. (1:4 ratio, 1 space with 2 dc, 4 spaces with 1 dc). Slip stitch to top of ch 2 to join. Ch 2, do not turn.

RND 4: Work dc in the same space. Dc in the next 5 spaces. Repeate the following 2 times *work 2 dc in the next space, dc in next 5 spaces* (1:5 ratio. 1 space with 2 dc, 5 spaces with 1 dc). Slip stitch to top of ch 2 to join. Ch 2, do not turn.

And you keep following this pattern, increasing the ratio by one for every round, until you reach the desired size (listed at the bottom in inches). To make a striped hat, you can color change every row, or I like to color change ever two rows. Then, you continue on with whichever brim option that you would like (I have two of them to choose from). Usually, the brim is done with a contrasting color.

Brim option 1: bpdc, fpdc
Bpdc: also known as back post double crochet. Yarn over, instead of inserting hook into the loops, you go around the dc post of the previous round. For the back post, you insert your hook through the “wrong side” (inside of your hat), go around the post toward the left. Yarn over, pull through two loops on hook, yarn over, pull through last two loops on hook.
Fpdc: also known as the front post double crochet. Yarn over, instead of inserting hook into the loops, you go around the dc post of the previous round. For the front post, you insert your hook through the “right side” (outside of your hat), go around the post toward the left. Yarn over, pull through two loops on hook, yarn over, pull through last two loops on hook.

For this brim option, you work 2-4 rounds alternating back post and front post all the way around. If you are having trouble understanding my written pattern for this, check out THIS YouTube tutorial.

Brim option 2: bobble stitches.
Bobble: Work 3 dc in same stitch. Remove hook. Count back three spaces and Insert hook *backwards*. Grab the last dc that you made and pull through the loop.
Bobble, dc, bobble, dc, bobble, dc, all the way around for 2-4 rounds.

Pompon
You can get fancy devices for making pompoms, or you can make one out of cardboard following THIS YouTube video. I just use my fingers, but using your fingers can also make for a bigger mess. Depending on how big you want it…for smaller pompoms, I just use two fingers (pointer and middle finger), and wrap the yarn loosely several times (20-50 times depending on how full you want it). Cut the yarn but leave it still wrapped around your fingers. Take another piece of yarn (preferably a bit longer 6-8 inches) and tie it around one side. Tie it as tightly as you can without breaking your yarn. I like to cut the other side while it is still on my fingers, but it doesn’t much matter if you go ahead and pull the loops off and then cut them. Fluff your pompom a bit, and give it a haircut to achieve the appropriate shape and desired size (being careful not to cut the yarn that you tied around it earlier, because this will also be used to tie onto your hat). And there you have it!

To gauge the size of your hat, fold it flat, and measure the unstretched brim. The following measurements are adapted from Bevs size chart.

Newborn – 6.5 – 7 inches
3-6 months – 7 – 8.5 inches
6-12 months – 8 – 9.5 inches
Toddler-Preschool (12 months – 3 years) – 9 – 10 inches
Child (3-10 years) – 9.5 – 10.5 inches
Preteen-teen – 10 – 11 inches
Adult small – 10.5 – 11 inches
Adult large – 11.5 – 12 inches

These patterns are based off of the measurements taken from Bev’s Size chart, if you aren’t sure about sizing measurements…well, I’ve included that too!

  • Newborn: Head Circumference 13″ – 14 ”  33-36cm; hat circ = 11.5″ – 13″ Hat height = 5.5 to 6″ 13-15 cm
  • Baby – 3 to 6 months: Head Circumference: 14″ – 17 ”  36-43 cm; Hat height= 6.5 – 7″ 15-18 cm
  • Baby – 6 to 12 months: Head Circumference: 16″ – 19 ”  41-48 cm ;  Hat height = 7.5″  18 cm
  • Toddler – preschooler (12 months – 3 years): Head Circumference: 18″ to 20 ” 46 -48 cm; Hat height = 8″  20 cm
  • Child (3 – 10 years): Head Circumference: 19″ – 20 1/2″  48-51 cm; Hat height =8.5″  22cm
  • Pre-teens and Teens  Hat: Head Circumference: 20 1/2″ – 22″   53 -56 cm; height 9-10″  25 cm
  • Adult Woman: Head Circumference:  21.5″ – 22.5″  Hat height = 11″
  • Adult Man: Head Circumference:  23″ – 24″  58.4 cm – 61 cm; Hat height = 11″-11.5″

Feel free to use and distribute this pattern however you would like, I don’t mind finished hats being sold from these patterns (That’s what I do with them), or for charity purposes, or auctions…or personal use…turn it upside down and use it as a bowl, add some handles and use it as a bag…skies the limit!
